Why it works
Differentiation, adapting content, process, and support to meet the range of learners in a classroom, is powerful but notoriously time-consuming, which is why it often does not happen. AI tools can make differentiation far more feasible by helping teachers quickly adapt a text to different reading levels, generate tiered or scaffolded versions of a task, create supports (sentence starters, graphic organizers, simplified or extended versions), translate or support multilingual learners, and generate varied practice at different levels, in a fraction of the time it would take manually. Used well, with the teacher reviewing and adapting the output and applying their knowledge of their students, AI can reduce the practical barrier that keeps differentiation from happening. It does not replace the teacher's judgment about what each student needs, but it can dramatically lower the effort of producing differentiated materials, making real differentiation achievable.
The research: AI literacy; research on differentiation.

The core activity: use AI to make differentiation feasible
Teachers leave using AI to produce differentiated materials, with judgment.
- Identify a differentiation need (reading levels, tiered tasks, scaffolds, multilingual support).
- Use AI to quickly produce the differentiated materials.
- Apply your knowledge of your students to decide what each needs, and review and adapt the AI output.
- Let AI lower the effort, not replace your judgment.
Facilitator notes
- Use AI to produce differentiated materials fast.
- Apply your knowledge of students, and review and adapt the output.
- AI lowers effort, not judgment.
Adapt it
- Elementary: adapt texts, tiered tasks, scaffolds.
- Secondary: tiered tasks, scaffolds, multilingual support.
- All settings: use AI to produce, apply judgment, review.

AI for Differentiation: feasible at last
Lower the effort: use AI to adapt texts and generate tiered tasks and scaffolds, then apply judgment and review.
- The differentiation need (reading levels, tiered tasks, scaffolds, multilingual):

Make it stick
Feasible at last:
- Use AI to make differentiation feasible.
- Apply your judgment.
