Why it works

Environmental and sustainability education, guided by standards (such as NAAEE's), develops environmental literacy: understanding ecological and human systems, how they interact, and the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and take action. Research supports hands-on, inquiry-based, systems-thinking approaches connected to the local environment and real issues, developing both understanding and a sense of agency. Done well, it is science-grounded and empowering, building reasoning and informed action rather than anxiety or one-sided messaging.

The research: NAAEE environmental literacy framework; research on environmental education.

Isn't this a politically charged topic?
Teach it as science and systems thinking, understanding ecological and human systems, evaluating evidence, and reasoning about trade-offs, developing informed thinkers, not pushing conclusions. Keep it grounded and empowering.
How do I make it engaging and not scary?
Use hands-on, inquiry-based, local, and action-oriented approaches that build understanding and agency. Empowerment and problem-solving, not fear, is what motivates and sticks.
