Why it works
Portfolios, curated collections of student work with reflection, and student-led conferences, where students present their learning to families, shift assessment toward student ownership and reflection. Research links them to greater student engagement, metacognition, and a richer picture of growth over time than grades alone, and to stronger family engagement. The value comes from the reflection and ownership, not just collecting work.
The research: Research on portfolios, reflection, and student-led conferences.

The core activity: plan a portfolio or student-led conference
Teachers leave with a portfolio or conference plan centered on student reflection.
- Decide what a portfolio would collect and how students select and reflect on work.
- Build in student reflection and goal-setting, the real value.
- If doing conferences, plan how students present their learning to families.
- Plan how it complements your grading.
