Why it works

Classrooms include students from many religious and cultural backgrounds, and inattention, assuming everyone shares the same holidays, foods, practices, or norms, can make students feel invisible or excluded. Thoughtful, respectful practices, being aware of major holidays and observances, accommodating dietary and dress needs, flexibility around religious scheduling, and not assuming or singling out, help every student feel they belong. The aim is respect and inclusion, handled sensitively and without making students representatives of their group.

The research: Research on inclusive and culturally responsive practice.

    Awareness and accommodation:

    Common questions

How do I handle religious and cultural differences respectfully?
Be aware of major observances, accommodate dietary and dress needs, offer flexibility around religious scheduling, and avoid assumptions, without singling students out or making them speak for their whole group.
    Should I celebrate every holiday?
Not necessarily, and be thoughtful about how. The goal is respect and inclusion, not performative celebration. Awareness, accommodation, and avoiding assumptions matter more than tokens.
    What's the most common mistake?
Assuming everyone shares the same background, holidays, foods, or norms, which quietly excludes students who do not. Build awareness and avoid assumptions.
