Why it works
Behavior and discipline handled inconsistently across a school, every teacher with different expectations, uneven and sometimes inequitable consequences, no shared supports, creates confusion, conflict, and unfairness. Leading a coherent schoolwide behavior system (such as PBIS or a multi-tiered system of behavior supports) establishes shared, taught expectations; consistent, fair responses; tiered supports for students who need more; and data to guide decisions and monitor equity. This is leadership work, no individual teacher can create the consistency and support a system provides. Done well, a schoolwide system makes the environment safer, more predictable, and more supportive, and reduces both misbehavior and disproportionate discipline.
The research: PBIS; multi-tiered systems of behavior support.

The core activity: lead a coherent behavior system
Leaders leave with steps toward a shared, tiered, data-informed system.
- Establish shared, taught behavior expectations across the school.
- Build consistent, fair responses (reducing inconsistency and disproportionality).
- Add tiered supports for students who need more.
- Use data to guide decisions and monitor equity.
Facilitator notes
