Why it works
Biomedical science is a rigorous STEM and health-science pathway exploring the human body (anatomy and physiology), how disease and injury affect it, how the body is studied and treated, and how biomedical innovation advances medicine, often through hands-on, investigative, problem-based learning (analyzing cases, conducting experiments, interpreting data). It engages students interested in medicine, health, and science with real, relevant content, and builds deep life-science understanding, investigative and reasoning skills, and awareness of the enormous range of health and medical careers (not just physician). Strong teaching grounds the compelling medical context in rigorous science and genuine investigation, treating biomedical science as the serious, interdisciplinary STEM field it is, a pathway into health careers and informed health citizenship.
The research: CTE and STEM standards; biomedical science education.

The core activity: ground medical interest in rigorous science
Teachers leave grounding the medical hook in life science and investigation.
- Pick a biomedical science topic or case.
- Teach the underlying life science (anatomy, physiology, disease).
- Use hands-on, investigative, problem-based learning (cases, experiments, data).
- Connect to the vast range of health and medical careers.
Facilitator notes
- Teach the underlying life science.
- Use hands-on, investigative, problem-based learning.
- Connect to diverse careers; ground interest in rigor.
Adapt it
- Middle school: body systems, disease, exploration, careers.
- High school: anatomy, physiology, investigation, careers.
- All settings: rigorous life science, investigation, careers.
