Why it works
Interior design is a design discipline combining creative aesthetics (color, texture, style, visual harmony) with practical and technical problem-solving (space planning, function, ergonomics, lighting, materials, codes and constraints) to create interior spaces that are beautiful, functional, and suited to human needs. Teaching it develops design thinking and the design process, spatial and visual reasoning, understanding of how design affects how people feel and function, knowledge of materials and elements, and attention to real constraints and client needs. It connects to careers in interior design, architecture, and related fields. Strong teaching treats interior design as serious design, balancing creativity with function, constraints, and human needs, not just decorating, and engages the design process of understanding a space and its users and solving for both beauty and purpose.

- Pick an interior design project or space.
- Develop creative aesthetics (color, style, harmony).
- Teach practical problem-solving (space planning, function, materials, constraints).
- Engage the design process, understanding users and needs, and balancing beauty with purpose.
Facilitator notes
